  2. Wellbeing Through Safety Mips

Safety helmets are relatively good at protecting the wearer from linear impacts and wearing a helmet with a liner will improve the protection slightly, however neither are designed to protect your workers against the real risk of rotational head injury.

Being hit by a moving object accounted for 8% of workplace injuries...so, what happens when a falling object hits someone whilst wearing a safety helmet?

The impact is perpendicular and strikes you square on the top of your safety helmet - if the impact is dead centre, there will be very limited rotational forces (if any) to the head/brain. However, if the impact is off centre (in any direction), rotational forces are introduced to the head/brain.

The Nexus Exterme Mips is the WORLD'S FIRST Safety Helmet with the Mips Cradle. It combines a low friction layer that allows the head to move inside the helmet which can redirect the harmful rotational motion otherwise transferred to the head.

Slips, trips or falls are the 2nd most common type of workplace accident in Great Britain and fall situations can lead to an increased risk of rotational head injury. The Mips Multi-directional Impact Protection System will help ensure your workers are safe from this because the low friction layer in the helmet is designed to reduce rotational motion transferred to the brain from angled impacts to the head.

Head injuries have the potential to affect almost every aspect of an employee's life so there's no question that head protection is a necessity. As a result, we advise employers to:

  • Identify and assess all workplace risks, both inside and outside
  • Speak to your company's Health and Safety Officer
  • Give employees the correct and most suitable protective garments, free of charge
  • Show employees the right way to wear their protection
  • Check regularly to make sure they're using the protection correctly.
